The process of design is introduced along with approaches to solving engineering problems, manipulations and presentations of engineering data, and applied engineering concepts.

Principles and engineering applications of biology. Principles and applications of biochemistry, genetics, microbial systems, animal systems, ecological systems and global systems. (B) (WR)

ABE 3042C Agricultural and Biological Engineering Design 1
Credits: 2.
Design of engineered agricultural and biological systems and devices. Problem definition analysis, synthesis, project management, economic, environmental and social impacts. Individual and team projects.

ABE 3062L Biological Engineering Laboratory
Credits: 2; Prereq: General Biology, General Chemistry and Differential Equations, or equivalent.
Quantitative laboratory studies of activities of biological systems, including microbial, plant and animal systems. (B)

Introduction to hydrology, flow through porous media, flood routing, grade control structures, erosion control, irrigation and drainage.

ABE 3612C Heat and Mass Transfer in Biological Systems

Transport phenomena, steady and unsteady state heat conduction, radiation, free and forced convection, mass transfer, psychometrics, thermodynamics of biological processes.

Credits: 3; Prereq: CHM 2045, MAC 2313 and PHY 2048.
Theory and use of physical and rheological properties of biological materials in agricultural engineering applications.

ABE 4036 Remote Sensing in Engineering: Science, Sensors, and Applications
Credits: 3; Prereq: MAP 2302, or equivalent.
To develop an understanding of remote sensing theory, systems and applications using information obtained from the visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, and microwave regions of the EM spectrum.

Senior capstone design project.

ABE 4171C Power and Machines for Biological Systems

Design and specifications of agricultural power units; soil, crops and machine interactions of agricultural tractors and machinery. Functional design requirements and operating characteristics of food production machinery.

ABE 4231C Irrigation and Drainage Engineering
Credits 4; Prereq: ABE 3212C and CWR 3201 or EGN 3353C.
Irrigation & drainage systems design including pump sizing & specification, water distribution systems, plant water requirement, drainage systems, & flood control.

ABE 4303C Structural and Environmental Design

Design and analysis of structures and environmental modification systems used in agricultural production.

ABE 4413C Post harvest Operations Engineering
Credits: 3; Prereq: ABE 3612C.
Engineering principles and practices of post harvest operations for the maintenance of quality of agricultural products. Design of systems and facilities.

ABE 4662 Quantification of Biological Processes
Credits: 3; Prereq: ABE 2062 or BSC 2010, BSC 2011, EML 3007, EGN 3353 or CWR 3201, ABE 3612C or EML 4140.
Quantitative description and analysis of biological processes pertaining to microbes, plants, animals and ecosystems. Biological transport phenomena, bioenergetics, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, bioregulation, circulatory and muscle systems, agroecosystems. Analytical and experimental laboratory for development of quantitative skills.

ABE 4812 Food and BioProcess Engineering Unit Operations
Credits: 4; Prereq: ABE 3612C, EML3007 and CWR 3201 or EGN 3353C.
Analysis of thermal freezing, evaporation, dehydration, contact equilibrium and mechanical separation process as governed by the reaction kinetics and rheology of processed foods.

ABE 4905 Individual Study in Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Credits: 1 to 4; Prereq: recommendation of department chairperson; can be repeated up to a maximum of 12 credits in the course.
Selected problems of projects in the student's major field of engineering study.

ABE 4912 Integrated Product and Processing Design 1 in Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Credits: 3.
The first part of a two-course sequence in which multidisciplinary teams of Engineering & business students partner with industry sponsors to design & build authentic products & processes – on time and within budget.

ABE 4913 Integrated Product & Process Design 2
Credits: 3; Prereq: ABE 4912.
The second part of ABE4912-13 sequence.

ABE 4931 Professional Issues in Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Credits: 1; Prereq: junior standing.
Current developments in agricultural and biological engineering, principles of agricultural and biological engineering practice, professional standards and ethics.

ABE 4932 Special Topics
Credits: 1 to 4; Prereq: permission of instructor. Can be repeated up to a maximum of 10 credits.
Variable subject content providing for the study of agricultural engineering topics not offered in other courses.

ABE 4949 Co-op Work Experience
Credits: 1; Prereq: EG classification; one term industrial employment, including extra work according to preapproved outline.
Practical engineering work under industrial supervision as set forth in the College of Engineering Regulations.
