College Mission

The College of Engineering fosters and provides world-class programs in engineering education, research and service to enhance the economic and social well-being of the citizens of Florida, the nation and the world.

Educational Objectives

  • Prepare students to communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral formats with audiences ranging from the technical to the uninformed.
  • Prepare students to be society-wise and technology-wise so they can function as effective partners with citizen and interest groups, industries, local, state, federal and international governing bodies and others in formulating policies and plans that address society’s current and emerging problems.
  • Prepare students to be effective engineering practitioners with the ability to employ contemporary engineering techniques, skills and tools that emphasize computer capability and the access and use of information resources.
  • Prepare students to translate scientific, mathematical and engineering theories into practical applications to engineering problems through classroom presentations, laboratory and other experimentation, data analysis, employment opportunities such as those offered by co-op, internships, association with research projects and other experiences.
  • Prepare students to function as interdisciplinary team members and/or team leaders in addressing multi- dimensional engineering and social problems with ethical, public health, environmental, political, economic and international dimensions.
  • Prepare students to recognize engineering problems, to develop skills and strategies to solve such problems, to be competent to carry out relevant design processes, to recognize the need for considering alternative approaches to problem-solving and to understand the realities of what society will and will not accept as feasible solutions.
  • Prepare students to be responsible practitioners with complete understanding of the ethical and professional dimensions of good engineering practice and the need for lifelong learning.

Accreditation

Engineering programs in all departments are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202, 410-347-7700.

All majors, with the exception of digital arts and sciences, interdisciplinary engineering studies, geomatics and nuclear engineering sciences, are accredited by the EAC. Geomatics is accredited by the Related Accreditation Commission (RAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

For additional information about a specific major, contact the undergraduate coordinator in the department or visit the dean’s office in Weil Hall.

Particle Engineering Research Center (PERC)

Information about the center’s research, education and technology transfer programs is available at 352- 846-1194 or erc@erc.ufl.edu.

Engineering and Industrial Experiment Station (EIES)

The EIES research program provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in an exciting research environment. Activities range from specially designed credit-earning research projects to field and laboratory experiments in concert with nationally recognized faculty. Many of these research activities also offer financial benefits through part-time employment on sponsored projects.

Student Services Center

The Engineering Student Services Center, located in Weil Hall, Room 311, is responsible for coordinating academic advising and developing and implementing other student support services, including career/lifestyle counseling, success workshops, study halls, tutoring and mentoring.

The center informs students of educational opportunities such as scholarships, tuition waivers, co-op and internship opportunities and available campus resources. The center also serves as liaison between academic departments and university-wide student services and facilities.

Multicultural Programs

These programs provide focused support to under-represented groups in the engineering profession. Students receive the personal, academic, social and cultural support they need to achieve academic success.

Services include orientation to UF and the college, academic and career advice, leadership development, engineering success skill development, counseling, financial assistance and tutoring.

Pre-Collegiate and College Transition Programs

The College of Engineering is involved in a wide range of programs that support student preparation in grades K-12. These include the Gator Engineering Outreach program, High School Outreach, SECME and Engineering GatorTrax.

The college also offers transition programs for incoming freshmen and community college transfer students to help them adjust to college life at the university.

Successful Transition through Enhanced Preparation for Undergraduate Programs (STEPUP) is a program with residential and nonresidential components designed to provide incoming freshmen with success skills and preparation in engineering foundation courses. The Engineering Freshman Transition Program (EFTP) also supports this objective.

The Community College Transfer Workshop highlights college expectations and eases the transition from community college to university life.

Information about these programs is available in the Engineering Student Services Center in Weil Hall, Room 311.
