Majors

Environmental Engineering
College: Engineering
Degree: Bachelor of Science
Hours for the Degree: 128
Minor: No
Combined-Degree Program: Yes
Website: www.ees.ufl.edu

Environmental engineering applies engineering and scientific principles to protect and preserve human health and the environment. It embraces broad environmental concerns, including air and water quality, solid and hazardous wastes, groundwater protection and remediation, water resources and management, environment policy, radiological health, environmental biology and chemistry, systems ecology, water and wastewater treatment and wetlands ecology.

Qualified students are encouraged to undertake masters and doctoral studies to broaden their employment opportunities.

Students with pre-medical interests can satisfy admission requirements for medical school with this program and a judicious selection of electives; however, total credits will exceed 128. Pre-med students must work with an adviser. Students from other departments can take courses in environmental engineering sciences if they have taken the prerequisites.

Environmental Studies Certificate: A certificate in environmental studies is available to students pursuing majors in these engineering programs:
  • Agricultural and Biological Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Engineering Science
  • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering Sciences

The program is designed for students who are concerned about environmental issues. Electives can be structured around a selected environmental theme to provide in-depth experience in a practical environmental problem of national or international concern.

Students must take a minimum of 14 semester hours of environmental courses; at least one course must be from each of the biological, physical and social sciences areas with a minimum of six semester hours in one area.

The college also offers a bachelor's program in environmental engineering through the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences. Generally, students fulfilling requirements for this degree satisfy requirements for the environmental studies certificate as well, and can receive the certificate if they choose.

Students should contact Environmental Studies in Carr Hall, Room 210, to register their intended course of study and to ensure that the certificate will be awarded upon graduation.

Mission

The department is committed to providing quality educational programs in environmental science and engineering. It conducts a nationally recognized environmental research program to contribute substantially to the benefit Florida, the nation and the earth. The department also provides authoritative guidance to individuals and organizations to prevent and to solve local, state, national and global environmental problems.

Educational Objectives
  • To instill a desire to learn and apply knowledge and skills to prevent and solve environmental problems,
  • To provide educational experiences in science, analysis and design, and social and cultural studies to prepare students for careers in environmental engineering and other professions,
  • To provide educational experiences that will enable students to work effectively with other professionals and to communicate their ideas clearly and concisely.
