Majors
The Department of Health Education and Behavior offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Education with specializations in community health education, health promotion, and health studies, and offers a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. The Physical Education teacher certification program prepares students to teach physical education in grades K-12. All students must complete the general education requirement, the prerequisite core, and a professional core in health education or physical education depending on the degree major.

Community healthis designed for students primarily interested in illness and disease prevention among special target groups within a particular community. Community health educators generally find employment in government health programs such as public health units or voluntary health agencies, such as the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, or Planned Parenthood organizations. Course work in this area provides practical instruction in addressing various public health needs and problems through the use of a variety of educational methods. This specialization also provides good background for students planning to enter a graduate program in health education or public health.
All course work must be completed before the internship.
Health promotion provides training for students interested in working as a health educator for employee-assistance programs and corporate or hospital-based wellness centers. Many companies utilizing large employee populations have noticed a significant decrease in absenteeism and an increase in work productivity for those employees actively participating in an exercise program. In addition, insurance rates tend to be lower for those employees thus providing an incentive for employers to offer such programs. Students choosing this specialization area are encouraged to seek elective course work within the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology.
All course work must be completed before the internship.
Health studies is designed for students pursuing admission to a professional school or graduate program. This specialization allows significant flexibility in completing necessary required course work for the health education degree program as well as prerequisite course work for professional programs such as chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, osteopathy or physical therapy. Students are also prepared to enter graduate programs in public health, health administration, epidemiology and disease prevention.
