Specialization: Community Health Education

Community health is designed for students primarily interested in illness and disease prevention among special target groups within a particular community. Community health educators generally find employment in government health programs such as public health units or voluntary health agencies, such as the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, or Planned Parenthood organizations. Course work in this area provides practical instruction in addressing various public health needs and problems through the use of a variety of educational methods. This specialization also provides good background for students planning to enter a graduate program in health education or public health.

All course work must be completed before the internship.

Specialization: Health Promotion

Health promotion provides training for students interested in working as a health educator for employee-assistance programs and corporate or hospital-based wellness centers. Many companies utilizing large employee populations have noticed a significant decrease in absenteeism and an increase in work productivity for those employees actively participating in an exercise program. In addition, insurance rates tend to be lower for those employees thus providing an incentive for employers to offer such programs.

Students choosing this specialization area are encouraged to seek elective course work within the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology.

All course work must be completed before the internship.
