Although not specifically stated in each course description, the prerequisites for all courses, except those required by other departments, may include classification as an electrical engineering student in good standing. Also, a student cannot take a course with an EEL prefix unless the student has earned a C or better in all prerequisite EEL prefix courses.

EEE 3396 Solid-State Electronic Devices
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3111C.
Introduction to the principles of semiconductor electron device operation.

EEE 4329 Future of Microelectronics Technology
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEE 3396 or equivalent.
Survey of state-of-the-art microelectronics technology and prospects for future technologies. Nanoscale MOSFETs, strained Si, high-k gate dielectrics, carbon nanotubes, molecular electronics, single-electron devices.

EEE 4331 Microelectronic Fabrication Technologies
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEE 3396.
Principles of microelectronic device fabrication. Emphasis on the fundamentals of microfabrication processing and microelectronic device process flows.

EEE 4373 Radio-Frequency Electronics
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3304C and EEL 3112.
This course will cover fundamental RF theory (such as resonant circuits, matching, noise and transmission lines), radio operation, and the design of key RF circuit blocks (such as amplifiers, mixers and oscillators).

EEE 4420 Introductory Quantum Mechanics for Nanodevices
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEE 3396.
Physical principles of modern solid-state devices and their applications; quantum mechanics; fundamentals of nanoelectronics.

EEL 3003 Elements of Electrical Engineering
Credits: 3; Prereq: MAC 2313 and PHY 2049.
An introduction to the theory and practice of electrical engineering for students not majoring in electrical engineering; circuits, machines, electronics and systems.

EEL 3105 Analytical Methods in Electrical Engineering
Credits: 3; Prereq: MAC 2313 and a programming language; Coreq: MAP 2302, EEL 3135.
Application of calculus to develop the analytical tools used in electrical engineering. Real and complex functions; linear spaces, eigevalue problem; linear differential operators; approximation, curve-fitting, interpolation.

EEL 3111C Circuits 1
Credits: 4; Prereq: MAC 2313 and PHY 2049; Coreq: MAP 2302.
Basic analysis of DC and AC electric circuits. Laboratory.

EEL 3112 Circuits, Systems and Signals
Credits: 4; Prereq: EEL 3111C, EEL 3135 and EEL 3105.
Continuous-time signals and linear systems: Fourier series and transforms, frequency, response, Laplace transform and system function, analog filters; emphasis on electrical circuits. Sampling. Discrete-time signals and systems; time- and frequency-domain analysis; sampled-data systems and design of digital filters.

EEL 3135 Introduction to Signals and Systems
Credits: 3; Prereq: CGS 2425, CIS 3020 and MAC 2313; Coreq: MAP 2302, and one of EEL 3105, MAS 3114 or MAS 4105.
Continuous-time and discrete-time signal analysis including Fourier series and transforms; sampling; continuous-time and discrete-time linear system analysis with FIR and IIR systems; impulse response, frequency response and system function.

EEL 3211 Basic Electric Energy Engineering
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3111C; Coreq: EEL 3112.
Analysis and modeling of power system components. Magnetic circuits, energy conservation, transformers, AC and DC rotating machines.

Introductory electrical engineering laboratory in electrical instrumentation, devices and systems.

Fundamentals of electronic circuits and systems. Laboratory.

EEL 3472 Electromagnetic Fields and Applications 1
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3111C.
Transmission line equations, electrostatics, magnetostatics, time-varying fields, plane waves and electromagnetic waves.

EEL 3473 Electromagnetic Fields and Applications 2
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3472.
Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic wave propagation in different media, antennas, waveguides, numerical methods, electromagnetic coupling.

EEL 3701C Digital Logic and Computer Systems
Credits: 4; Coreq: CIS 3020 or CGS 2425.
An overview of logic design, algorithms, computer organization and assembly language programming and computer engineering technology. Laboratory.

EEL 4201L Electrical Energy Conversion Laboratory
Credits: 1; Prereq: EEL 3211.
Electric energy conversion, devices and systems.

EEL 4213 Electric Energy Systems 1
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3211.
System models for generators, transformers, transmission lines and large-scale power networks. Matrix formulations, power flow analysis, symmetrical component theory, balanced and unbalanced fault analysis.

EEL 4230 Electronic Drives and Motor Control
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3211 and EEL 3112.
Analysis and design of AC and DC motor controls with semiconductor converter drives. Controlled rectifier and chopper drives for DC motors; cycloconverter and inverter drives for AC motors.

EEL 4242C Power Electronic Circuits
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3304C.
Circuit topologies, analysis, design and simulation of electronic circuits such as power supplies and motor drives.

EEL 4306C Electronic Circuits 2
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3112 and EEL 3304C.
Design-oriented continuation of EEL 3304; feedback, op amp circuits and applications, digital electronics. Laboratory.

EEL 4310C Digital Integrated Circuits

Analysis and design of digital circuits using MOS and bipolar devices. Laboratory.

EEL 4440 Optical Communication Systems

Introduction to electromagnetic waves, dielectric waveguides and fibers, propagation characteristics of fibers, characterization methods, LEDs and laser diodes, photodetector optical receivers and communication systems.

The use of electronic digital modules to design computers. Organization and operation of computers. Hardware/software tradeoffs. Design of computer interfacing. Laboratory.

EEL 4744C Microprocessor Applications
Credits: 4; Prereq: EEL 3701C.
Elements of microprocessor-based systems; hardware interfacing and software design for their application. Laboratory.

EEL 4750C Introduction to Digital Signal Processing
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3135 and EEL 4744C.
Fundamentals of filter design and Fourier transforms. Hardware implementation of filters. Simulation of signal processing systems using MATLAB.

EEL 4834 C++ Programming for Electrical Engineers
Credits: 3.
Develop computer skills and art of writing good computer programs using C and C++ languages. Examples and exercises relevant to Electrical Engineering are used.

EEL 4905 Individual Problems in Electrical Engineering
Credits: 1 to 4; can be repeated with a change in content up to 4 credits.
Selected problems or projects in the student's major field of engineering study.

EEL 4912 Integrated Product and Process Design 1
Credits: 3; Prereq: EEL 3304C and EEL 3701C.
The first part of a two-course sequence in which multidisciplinary teams of engineering and business students partner with industry sponsors to design and build authentic products and processes-on time and within budget. Working closely with industry liaison engineers and a faculty coach, students gain practical experience in teamwork and communication, problem solving and engineering design, and develop leadership, management and people skills.

The second part of EEL 4912-4913 sequence.

EEL 4924C Electrical Engineering Design
Credits: 3; Prereq: senior standing.
Selected design projects involving engineering applications in the various areas of electrical engineering. Must be taken prior to the semester of graduation. Laboratory.

EEL 4930 Special Topics in Electrical Engineering
Credits: 1 to 4; can be repeated with change in content up to 6 credits.
Special courses covering selected topics in electrical engineering.

EEL 4931 Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Seminar
Credits: 1; maximum 1 credit; Prereq: EG classification.
A series of seminars given by a group of faculty members in the department.

EEL 4939 Electric Utility Seminar
Credits: 1.
A series of weekly seminars on the electric utility industry. Lectures from industry engineers include various technical topics related to power engineering.

EEL 4948 Practical Work in Electrical and Computer Engineering
Credits: 1; Prereq: 3EG classification.
One term industrial employment, including extra work according to a pre-approved outline. Practical engineering work under industrial supervision, as set forth in the College of Engineering regulations. Grading is on an S-U basis only.

EEL 4949 Co-op Work Experience
Credits: 1; Prereq: EG classification.
Practical co-op engineering work under approved industrial supervision. Grading is on an S-U basis only.

EGN 4930 Sales Engineer Seminar
Credits: 1.
Intended for students interested in pursuing a career in sales engineering (required for students enrolled in the Sales Engineering Certificate Program). Lectures and discussions on practice-oriented sales engineering topics. (S-U)
