Majors
Anthropology is the study of people in their cultural context and the examination of all aspects of patterned social behavior. The discipline is worldwide in scope encompassing all aspects of human biological and social life from the earliest times to the present. It is a broad, holistic field that seeks to understand human adaptation to natural and social environments.
Anthropology includes the following four-subfields: cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Undergraduates can concentrate their studies in one of these four subfields. All degrees granted to students are in the field of anthropology rather than the area of concentration.
An undergraduate major in anthropology prepares students to work in today's complex world where international activities characterize business, government, and education. Anthropology majors learn about different groups of people, their prehistory, and their diversity through a discipline that combines science and the humanities. Many undergraduate anthropology majors go on to graduate school in the social sciences, while others use anthropology to prepare themselves for professional careers in other disciplines. In a world of increasingly globalization and international relations, anthropology is perhaps the most relevant liberal arts and sciences for students interested in pursuing professional careers in health, business and law, among other fields.
An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, including
Interdisciplinary Certificate and Minor: The department encourages students to choose a minor or an interdisciplinary certificate option in Latin American studies, African studies, Asian studies, women's studies, linguistics, Jewish studies or environmental studies. Relevant courses in anthropology may be used to fulfill some requirements. Students can combine anthropology courses with courses in other fields for an interdisciplinary major. A minor in anthropology is also available.
Courses: There are no prerequisites for 2000-level courses. Descriptions of new courses are posted outside Turlington Hall, Room 1112. Students in the honors program may take the honors sections of ANT 2301 Human Sexuality and Culture, ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology, ANT 2140 Introduction to World Archaeology, ANT 3514C Introduction to Biological Anthropology and ANT 3620 Language and Culture. Honors students are also eligible at the sophomore level and above to take, with permission of the instructor, any graduate-level course. Honors students are encouraged to continue in the department's honors program.
Students are encouraged to take anthropology courses that include method, theory and topical courses, as well as area courses in either the ethnographic or archaeological cultures of different regions.

Students concentrating in either cultural anthropology or archaeology are also encouraged to complete either an ethnographic study abroad program or an archaeological field school. It is recommended that these be completed before senior year.

Requirements for the Major
An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, including
- ANT 2000,
- ANT 2410,
- ANT 2140,
- ANT 3514 and
- ANT 3620.
- All five required courses can be taken in fall or spring.
- Majors are encouraged to take ANT 2000 in their first year of course work. Of the remaining 18 hours, 15 must be 3000 level and above.
- In addition, all anthropology majors are required to take STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics 1.
- All course work counted toward the major must have a grade of C or better.
