Majors

Botany (CLAS)
College: Liberal Arts and Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Science
Hours for Degree: 120
Specializations: Basic Botany, Preprofessional Botany
Minor: Yes
Combined-Degree Program: Yes
Website: www.botany.ufl.edu/

The Department of Botany offers two tracks for students who wish to pursue a B.S. degree in botany: the basic botany track and the preprofessional botany track, which is for students who plan to attend professional (e.g., medical, dental, law) or graduate school. Students who major in botany can also be certified to teach biology in secondary schools.

The curriculum provides a broad background in the biology of plants - from the molecular to the organismic level. Students who major in botany will take courses in ecology, genetics, physiology, taxonomy, anatomy, molecular biology of plants and biochemistry. These small-sized classes are taught by faculty who enjoy teaching and have a commitment to undergraduate education. Opportunities also exist for students to do independent or assist in faculty research projects on campus and abroad. The major prepares students for careers in industry, government agencies and teaching jobs in high schools.

Basic Botany (for students who do not plan to attend graduate or professional school)
Preprofessional Preparation (for students with strong backgrounds in the basic sciences who intend to attend graduate or medical or dental school)
