The major in East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) develops proficiency in Chinese and Japanese language and acquaints students with the literature and cultural history of China and Japan. Courses are also available for those interested in business Chinese and Japanese, classical Chinese and Japanese, film, and women's studies.

The major provides students with the foundation for further work at the graduate level in East Asian studies or allied fields (linguistics, history, and religion). An EALL major is excellent general preparation for entry to professional schools (medicine, law) or careers in foreign service, diplomacy, translation, business, import and export of information and culture, museums and libraries, tourism, among others.

A minimum of 30 credit hours at the 3000 level or above is required. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses to count toward the major; designations of satisfactory or unsatisfactory are not acceptable.

Overseas Study

A yearlong full-tuition exchange program is available at Kansai Gaidai, near Osaka, Japan, which offers courses in Japanese language (all levels) and area studies focusing on Japan and its international role. There also is an exchange program with Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.

UF in Beijing at Tsinghua University is a transfer-credit program that features summer intensive courses in Intermediate and Advanced Chinese, using the same required textbooks as at UF; it also provides Chinese language and culture courses at all levels year-round. Other semester, year-long, or summer programs are available at the Mandarin Training Center of National Taiwan University (Taipei) and at Shaanxi Teachers University (Xi'an).

Courses: The department anticipates coordinating the language, literature and culture components of a Bachelor of Arts in Asian studies in the future. Majors in either track of EALL are not allowed to minor in Asian studies (either Option 1 or 2), and conversely, Asian studies majors are not allowed to minor in either track of EALL to avoid redundancy. All languages offered through this department fulfill the language requirements of the various colleges.

For both the Chinese and Japanese Specializations

This represents an ideal progression through the EALL major. Your actual courses may be different depending on language preparation and availability of courses. In particular, beginning language is best started semester 1 and no later than semester 3, but study abroad or accredited intensive summer courses can be used to catch up. All requirements must be met for graduation.

Several of the courses in the major count for GE-H, N and/or the writing and math requirement.

To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.
