The Major:The department offers a major in communication sciences and disorders. Students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathology/audiology or phonetic sciences.
This is a limited-access major. By semester five and to continue in the major, students must meet the following requirements: 2.8 or higher GPA; complete two of the following courses (6 hours minimum) or their equivalents with a 2.75 average in them: PSY 2012, SPA 3002, SPA 2024, COM 1000, SPC 2300, SPC 2600, and EEX 3312. All students should take PSY 2012. UF freshmen and sophomores should take SPA 2024 and/or 3002 to prepare for the major.
Students are required to complete 33 hours in the major and the college requirements for graduation. STA 2122 or an equivalent is also required. Majors should work out a planned program with their department adviser. Both the adviser and the student will sign the CSD course requirement schedule for graduation. This signed program becomes the contract for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders at UF to complete a major in the department.
Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must have an average junior/senior level GPA of 3.5. To graduate magna cum laude (high honors) or summa cum laude (highest honors), the student must also have completed a minimum of three credits in SPA 4931 (Honors in Communication Science & Disorders) and a thesis judged to be of high quality.
General Education: SPA 2024, Human Communication Dynamics, and COM 1000, Introduction to Communication Studies, satisfy part of the social science requirement. STA 2122 or its equivalent can satisfy part of the math requirement.
Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
A pre-professional academic/clinical program precedes study for the master’s degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. To qualify for these certifications or licenses, it is necessary to complete a master’s degree:
