Anthropology

Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

THE MAJOR: An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, includ-ing ANT 2410, ANT 3141, ANT 3620 and ANT 3514. Of the remaining 21 hours, 15 must be 3000 level and above. In addition, all anthropology majors are required to take STA 2122, Statistics for the Social Sciences or STA 2023, Introduction to Statistics. All course work counted toward the major must have a grade of C or better.

All undergraduates should contact the department coordinator soon after enrolling at the university. Transfer credits in anthropology must be approved in writing by the undergraduate coordinator to count toward the degree program.

Interdisciplinary Certificate: The department en-courages students to choose a minor or an interdiscipli-nary certificate option in Latin American studies, African studies, Asian studies, women’s studies, linguistics, Jewish studies or environmental studies and a major in anthropology. Relevant courses in anthropology may be used to fulfill some requirements. Students can combine anthropology courses with courses in other fields for an interdisciplinary major.

HONORS: Students must have at least a 3.5 jun-ior/senior level GPA.  Students seeking high or highest honors must also earn a 3.5 GPA in anthropology courses and take an advanced seminar or beginning graduate level courses in a topical area of their choice, with the permis-sion of the undergraduate coordinator. In a subsequent semester students must register for three hours of ANT 4914 (department honors). Under the direction of an honors adviser, students will write an honors essay on a topic suggested by the previous advanced course. Upon recommendation of the department the student will receive high or highest honors.

THE MINOR: Students may minor in anthropology by completing 15 hours with a grade of C or better (no S grades are accepted). A minimum of nine hours must be taken at the university, and at least nine hours must be at the 3000 level or above. Courses with a number ending in “905” do not apply to the minor. Two courses are re-quired: Cultural Anthropology, ANT 2410 and one of the following: ANT 3141, ANT 3620 or ANT 3514.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Students are encouraged to participate in overseas studies in academic classes and in ethnographic and archeological field schools. The Yuca-tan, Mexico program is sponsored by the department. Other programs are available throughout the world. An-thropology major credit is given for appropriate courses.

GENERAL EDUCATION: The majority of courses in anthropology contribute to international studies and diversity (I) and social sciences (S). Some courses are also humanities (H) and physical and biological sciences (P, B) require-ments.

COURSES: There are no prerequisites for 2000 level courses. Descriptions of new courses are posted outside 1350 Turlington. Students in the honors program may take the honors sections of ANT 2410 Cultural Anthro-pology, ANT 3514 Biological Anthropology and ANT 3620 Language and Culture.  Honors students are also eligible at the sophomore level and above to take, with permission of the instructor, any graduate level course. Honors students are encouraged to continue in the de-partment’s honors program.

NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six gen-eral education credits must be international/diversity (I).
