The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Bi-ology in the College of Medicine offers an interdiscipli-nary studies major in biochemistry and molecular biol-ogy. This major is for students with a strong interest in cell processes, genetics, molecular biology, metabolism, physical biochemistry, structural biology, medicine or other health sciences.  An application and further informa-tion are available from the interdisciplinary studies direc-tor in 2014 Turlington. Also, refer to the biochemistry section under the College of Medicine in this catalog. Application should be made during the second semester of the sophomore year. A 3.0 GPA is required.

The advanced level course work required for this program includes BCH 4024, at least two semesters of BCH 4905 (Biochemistry Senior Research) and submis-sion of a senior thesis. Enrollment in BCH 4024 is a prerequisite for enrollment in BCH 4905. Students also select one of the following biochemistry and molecular biology offerings: BCH 6206, 6415 or 6740. Other elec-tives include advanced undergraduate offerings of the departments of botany, chemistry, computer science, microbiology and cell science, neuroscience and zoology.

The department offers a full program of courses for the student preparing for advanced degrees in the biologi-cal, agricultural, and life sciences, and for professional school.

The major course offering, BCH 4024, provides a general background in biochemistry and molecular biol-ogy for professional school or advanced specialized studies.

Students in other majors who are interested in a re-search career in biochemistry and molecular biology should take BCH 4024 as early in their undergraduate program as possible. Students interested in supplement-ing these didactic courses with laboratory research experi-ence can register for BMS 4905 with department ap-proval.

BMS 4012, Cell Biology Seminar, is part of the Junior Honors Medical Program that permits early entry into medical school. Enrollment is limited. Additional information is available from the assistant dean for pre-professional education.
Information on research opportunities, advanced study and permission to continue in the major (i.e., application to the IDS program) is available from the undergraduate studies coordinator.
