In this major, students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathology/audiology or phonetic sciences.

This is a limited-access major. By the end of semester five and to continue into the major, students must meet the following requirements: 2.8 or higher GPA; complete four of the following courses (16 hours minimum) or their equivalents with a 2.75 average in them:
  • Three of the following courses: COM 1000, EEX 3312, PSY 2012, SPA 2024, SPC 2300, SPC 2600, and
  • STA 2023,

UF freshmen and sophomores should take EEX 3312, PSY 2012, SPA 2024 as well as the required STA 2023 or its equivalent as their four preprofessional courses to prepare for the major.

Students are required to complete 32 hours in the major (with grades of C or better) and the college requirements for graduation. STA 2023, EEX 3312 (Exceptional People) and ENC 3254 (Writing in the Discipline) are also required. Majors should see a department advisor to create a program plan of study, which becomes the contact for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders at UF to complete a major in the department.

General Education: Some required courses may also satisfy general education requirements.

Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

A preprofessional academic/clinical program precedes study for a post-graduate degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. It is necessary to complete a master's degree in speech-language pathology and an Au.D. in audiology to qualify for these certifications:
  • Certificate of clinical competence in audiology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
  • Certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
  • Teacher certification issued by the state Department of Education, and
  • State licensure issued by the Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in the Agency for Health Care Administration.
