2005-06 Undergraduate Catalog
Majors
This major is offered through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students should have a strong interest in mathematics and some interest in computing. A student majoring in statistics can also work toward a minor in actuarial science. Students should meet with a statistics adviser early to plan a program that reflects individual interests and needs.
** PHY 2020 and three elective hours can be taken for CHM 1020 and 1021
+ Both courses must be taken at some point
++ The three-course sequence, MAC 3272, 3722 and 3474 (Honors Calculus 1-3) can be substituted for MAC 2311, 2312 and 2313
1 Department core courses: STA 4210, 4211, 4321, and 4322. STA 4210-4211 must be taken in sequence. STA 4321-4322 should be completed by the end of the junior year. Student must receive a minimum C grade within two attempts (including withdrawals) on core courses.
2 Three courses are required: STA 4173, 4222, 4502, 4504, 4664, 4702, 4821, 4853.
3 One course is required: CGS 2420, CGS 2425-25L (ESI listing), CGS 3460 (preferred) or CGS 3403.
4 Twenty-one (21) non-STA electives must be 3000 level or higher. If graduate study is contemplated, MAA 4226, 4227 and MAS 4107 are recommended; choose other electives from the physical, biological or agricultural sciences.
5 Choose one: COT 4105, ESI 4312, MAA 4102, MAA 4211, MAD 4401, MAS 4105 (if not in core) or MAS 4107

Semester 1:
- 2.0 UF GPA required for semesters 1-5
Semester 2:
- Complete MAC 1147 or higher-level calculus
Semester 3:
- Complete MAC 2311
Semester 4:
- Complete MAC 2312 with a 2.5 GPA on all critical-tracking course work
Semester 5:
- Complete MAC 2313 and either programming elective or any 3000 or 4000-level STA course with a 2.5 GPA on all critical-tracking course work
- Statistics majors are encouraged to take STA 3032 or STA 2023 early to facilitate tracking into junior-level statistics courses. They cannot take any statistics course at the 3000 level or below after semester four. Students cannot retake any core or elective course(s) in which a grade of C+ or better had already been earned.
- The student must receive a minimum C grade within two attempts (including withdrawals) in every required core course and in each course counted toward the 12-hour STA elective requirement. The grades from all attempts of the core requirements will be used to compute a core GPA that must exceed 2.0. The student must maintain an overall 2.0 GPA for all core and elective requirements.
- Of the 42, credits that are required for the bachelor's degree, at least 18 credits must have been earned with a minimum C grade while the student was enrolled at the university. At least 12 of the 15 STA core requirements must be included in this 18-hour requirement.
To remain on track, students must complete the appropriate critical-tracking courses, which will be bold.
