The agricultural education specialization provides the basic courses for agricultural teacher certification in Florida. Students must have a passing score on the CLAST and a minimum GPA of 2.5 to enter the teacher education specialization. In addition, graduates must apply to the state’s Department of Education for certification.

To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following criteria. Critical-tracking courses appear in bold.

Agricultural Leadership

Agricultural leadership prepares students for entry into agribusiness positions related to human resource management, corporate training and development, agricultural literacy, political interests and commodity service organizations. Course work focuses on a core of agricultural courses plus department courses on leadership theory and strategies, educational/training programs design, professional presentation delivery and interpersonal communication.

Agricultural Communication

The agricultural communication specialization prepares agricultural communication professionals. Media skills include publications, electronic media, graphic arts, advertising and public relations.

Students must meet department and college requirements and have a minimum overall UF GPA of 2.5. Students also must complete MMC 2100, Writing for Mass Communication, with a C or higher.

Extension Education

The extension education specialization prepares students for positions in the cooperative extension service. Course work in the major will focus on a core of agricultural courses along with emphasis in nonformal education, designing educational/training programs and professional presentations, leadership development, teaching/training methods and interpersonal communication. A four-credit, six-week internship with the Cooperative Extension Service is required.

Extension Education Minor

The extension education minor supplements the major and prepares students for careers in the cooperative extension service. The minor offers course work in nonformal and formal educational methods, adult education, leadership, youth programs, communication methods and field experience.

With adviser approval, all undergraduates in the college are eligible for this minor. Students in other colleges can also enroll with Department of Agricultural Education and Communication approval.

Agricultural Communication Minor

This minor provides basic understanding of the communication techniques used in agriculture and natural resources. The minor is open to all students at the university. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 for courses in the minor is required. Students complete five courses for a minimum of 15 credits:
