Food and Resource Economics

The Department of Food and Resource Economics (FRE) offers three specializations: food and agribusiness marketing and management, natural resources, environmental economics and policy, and international food and resources economics.

To graduate, FRE majors must complete all college and department requirements in effect at the time they entered the college and earn a GPA of at least 2.25 in all AEB courses.

Students who have completed 30 credit hours but fewer than 60 are required to complete mathematics through precalculus (MAC 1147 or equivalent) before admission to the college.

Students who have completed 60 or more credit hours are required to complete mathematics through calculus (MAC 2233 or equiv.) before admission to the college.

Students should consult an adviser for approval of electives.

Food and Resource Economics

To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical-tracking criteria. Critical-tracking courses appear in bold.

Semester 1:

  • 2.0 UF GPA required semesters 1-5
  • Complete one of seven critical courses – excluding labs – CHM 1083, MAC 2233, STA 2023, AEB 3103, ACG 2021C, ACG 2071, BSC 2007, BSC 2009L

Semester 2:

  • Complete one additional critical course – excluding labs

Semester 3:

  • Complete one additional critical course – excluding labs. MAC 2233 must be one of the three courses

Semester 4:

  • Complete one additional critical course. AEB 3103 must be one of the four courses

Semester 5:

  • Complete all critical-tracking courses – including labs

Food and Agribusiness Marketing and Management

The specialization is for students interested in food and fiber systems management, marketing, finance and international business and employment opportunities and sales and managerial positions in agribusiness firms, commercial banks, the Farm Credit Service, insurance and appraisal firms.

An off-campus degree program in food and agribusiness marketing and management is available in Fort Pierce.

Agricultural and Natural Resources Ethics and Policy Minor

This interdisciplinary minor is available for undergraduate students who wish to augment their technical training in the agricultural and resource-related disciplines with selected liberal arts and sciences courses and IFAS policy-related courses.

The minor also helps to augment business, humanities, journalism or social sciences education with selected courses in IFAS pertaining to unique agricultural and natural resources issues and problems. This minor can serve as additional preparation for careers in education, business, law or politics.
