Horticultural Science

Students majoring in horticultural science may choose one of two specializations: general horticultural sciences or fruit and vegetable crops. An academic adviser will help to develop the course work.

Students at the Ft. Pierce Research and Education Center can major in general horticulture or fruit and vegetable crops.

Horticultural Sciences

To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical-tracking criteria. Critical-tracking courses appear in bold.

Semester 1:

  • 2.0 UF GPA required semesters 1-5
  • Complete 1 of 7 critical courses – excluding labs – CHM 2045, CHM 2045L, AEB 3103 or ECO 2023, MAC 1147, BOT 2010C, BOT 2011C, PHY 2004 or PHY 2020

Semester 2:

  • Complete 2 additional critical courses – excluding labs

Semester 3:

  • Complete 1 additional critical course – excluding labs

Semester 4:

  • Complete 2 additional critical courses – excluding labs

Semester 5:

  • Complete all critical-tracking courses – including labs

Fruit and Vegetable Crops

This is a comprehensive program for careers in any phase of the fruit and vegetable industries such as production management, agricultural sales, marketing, and technical representation.

Horticultural Science Minor

Any student can minor in horticultural science. Some background courses in botany or plant sciences are assumed and recommended. Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 credit hours.
