The Major: The department offers a major in communication sciences and disorders. Students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathology/audiology or phonetic sciences.

This is a limited-access major. By the end of semester five and to continue into the major, students must meet the following requirements: 2.8 or higher GPA; complete four of the following courses (16 hours minimum) or their equivalents with a 2.75 average in them:

  • Three of the following courses: COM 1000, EEX 3312, PSY 2012, SPA 2024, SPA 3002, SPC 2300, SPC 2600, and
  • STA 2023, and
  • LIN 2210.

UF freshmen and sophomores should take EEX 3312, PSY 2012, SPA 2024 as well as the required STA 2023 and LIN 2210 as their five preprofessional courses to prepare for the major.

Students are required to complete 33 hours in the major and the college requirements for graduation. STA 2023 (Introduction to Statistics 1) and ENC 3254 (Writing in the Discipline) are also required. Majors should work out a planned program with their departmental adviser. Both the adviser and the student will sign the CSD course requirement schedule for graduation. This signed program becomes the contract for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders at UF to complete a major in the department.

Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must have an average junior/senior level GPA of 3.5. To graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude, the student must also have completed a minimum of three credits in SPA 4931 (Honors in Communication Science & Disorders) and a thesis judged to be of high or highest quality.

General Education: SPA 2024, Human Communication Dynamics, and COM 1000, Introduction to Communication Studies, satisfy part of the social science requirement. STA 2023 or its equivalent can satisfy part of the math requirement.

Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

A preprofessional academic/clinical program precedes study for a post-graduate degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. It is necessary to complete a master’s degree in speech-language pathology and an Au.D. in audiology to qualify for these certifications:

  • certificate of clinical competence in audiology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
  • certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
