Landscape Architecture

www.dcp.ufl.edu/landscape

The five-year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board and leads to the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree. Graduating from an accredited program is an essential first step toward licensing in Florida and other states. Students study the art of design, planning or management, and the arrangement of natural and man-made elements on the land through application of cultural and scientific knowledge. Resource conservation and the requirements of the built environment are studied.

Graduates are employed by professional offices; municipal, state or federal recreation and resource agencies; landscape architectural or planning agencies; and the construction, development or horticultural industries. Graduates also may continue on to graduate school at UF or throughout the country.

Field trips are required as part of normal course work; three trips are required. A summer and fall internship under a registered landscape architect also is required, and domestic or foreign study opportunities are available. Students should have adequate funds for trips and studio materials.

Students need personal computers with CADD graphics capabilities. The department will provide specifications before purchase.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required. Majors must attain a minimum C grade in all LAA courses. A grade of D+ is considered a failing grade and must be retaken until a grade of C or better is earned. In some courses (see adviser) a student may not proceed through a sequence until a C grade is earned.

Minor in Landscape Architecture

The objective of a minor in landscape architecture is to provide a general overview of the profession. The minor provides introduction to environmental and cultural issues and to design, planning, and management theory and applications. A minor does not qualify a student for practice or for professional licensure.

Students must be accepted into an upper-division college before application. Application for the minor should be made as soon as possible after acceptance to aid in charting course work. To be considered, students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Students must maintain a C or higher in all minor course work. All graduating students who meet the requirements and have been approved for the minor will have the minor officially listed on their transcript.

A minimum of 15 hours is required, with six hours of required course work. The remaining hours should be determined based on the student’s interests and background. Students with design, construction, engineering or other technical backgrounds may participate in design and/or construction studios in addition to lecture courses. Acceptance into studio courses is granted with the permission of the instructor and as space is available. Upon application, students will be advised as to what courses are appropriate.

Additional courses in the professional design and construction sequences and in graduate seminars may be possible for students with specialized backgrounds, such as in other design fields, building construction or engineering. The instructor’s permission is required to take courses other than those listed above.

Minor in Urban and Regional Planning

Society’s demands on the built and natural environment continue to increase. Planning addresses the interface between the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of communities and regions – never before has the need to shape visions and guide community outcomes been greater. The minor in Urban and Regional Planning introduces the student to the challenging and vital aspects of creating, improving and sustaining communities and regions.

Requirements:

Six hours required of all students:

URP 3001 Cities of the World

3

URP 4000 Preview of URP

3

Nine hours of electives selected from the following:

URP 2931 Seminar in Urban & Regional Issues

3

URP 4273 Survey of Planning Info Systems

3

URP 4715 Bikeways Planning & Design

3

URP 4880 Crime Prevention Planning

3

URP 4905 Special Studies in URP

3

Application should be made early so that guidance can be given in terms of course selection and special studies parameters. To be accepted, students must have a 2.5 (C+) grade point average and maintain a C+ or higher in all minor course work. No S grades accepted for the minor coursework. The URP Minor does not provide professional certification. It is the responsibility of each student to declare the minor through their major degree department or college and to obtain required signatures from both their department and URP.

Study Abroad/Off-Campus Studies

Off-campus programs include the College of Design, Construction and Planning’s Preservation Institute: Nantucket for nine credit hours, held each summer. There are a variety of programs offered via UF’s International Division that may be appropriate for inclusion in the URP minor. Students need approval before studying abroad. Credits vary from three to nine hours, depending on the intensity and appropriateness of the selected program.
